RAN MODERN SHIPS Several RAN ships exist in SF, mostly historical, however we have the Oliver Hazard Perry (Australian Modified Version) class HMAS Adelaide, and HMAS Canberra. ADELAIDE CLASS FFG
HMAS ADELAIDE (FFG-01) is a long-range escort frigate with roles including area air defence, anti-submarine warfare, surveillance, reconnaissance, and interdiction. The Ship can simultaneously counter threats from the air, surface and sub-surface. Built in the United States , ADELAIDE was commissioned on 15 November 1980 and was the first of six ADELAIDE class guided-missile frigates to be delivered to the Royal Australian Navy. ADELAIDE is the second ship in the RAN to carry this name. The first was a light cruiser that served from 1922 to 1945. Along with her five sister ships, CANBERRA , SYDNEY , DARWIN , MELBOURNE and NEWCASTLE , ADELAIDE is powered by gas turbines for it's main propulsion. Guided-missile frigates can be underway from a cold start in less than 30 minutes. In addition, two forward mounted auxiliary propulsion units provide a secondary means of propulsion and excellent manoeuvrability in confined waters. ADELAIDE is equipped with a number of sensors that include long range radars for air and surface surveillance, electronic warfare and optical surveillance systems, a medium range sonar and a command and control system, that can incorporate target data received by data link from other ships and aircraft. The principal weapons installed in ADELAIDE are the Standard medium-range anti-aircraft missile and the Harpoon anti-shipping missile. Both missiles are launched from the Mk 13 launcher on the forecastle. A 76mm gun to counter both air and surface threats is fitted forward of the funnel. A 20mm Phalanx close-in-weapons-system, Nulka decoy and chaff systems are fitted for anti-missile defence. ADELAIDE has a capacity for two S-70B-2 Seahawk helicopters and is fitted with two sets of Mk 32 triple torpedo tubes to provide a counter to submarines. ADELAIDE was the first guided-missile frigate to be home-ported in Western Australia . The ship has participated in the 1990/91 Gulf War, peacekeeping operations in East Timor in 1999 and was deployed to the Arabian Gulf as part of the International Coalition against Terrorism in 2001 and 2004. HMAS CANBERRA (FFG-02) was a long range escort frigate that undertook roles including area air-defence, anti-submarine warfare, surveillance, reconnaissance and interdiction. The ship was capable of countering simultaneous air, surface and sub-surface threats. Canberra and her five sister frigates HMA Ships Adelaide, Sydney, Darwin, Melbourne and Newcastle, were the first Royal Australian Navy (RAN) ships to be powered by gas turbines for their main propulsion. This, combined with a modern repair by replacement policy, has allowed both a reduced complement and a high availability for sea. Canberra can be underway in less than 30 minutes. In addition, two forward mounted retractable auxiliary propulsion units are fitted to provide excellent manoeuvrability in confined waters. Canberra 's principal weapons are the Standard medium range anti-aircraft missile and the Harpoon anti-ship missile, both of which are fired from the Mk13 launcher on the forecastle. A 76mm gun to counter both anti-aircraft and anti-surface threats is fitted forward of the funnel. The NULKA decoy system and one 20mm Phalanx close-in weapon system are fitted for anti-missile defence. For long range anti-submarine tasks, Canberra is equipped with a flight deck and hangars for two S-70B-2 Seahawk helicopters. For close-in anti-submarine defence the ship is fitted with two Mk 32 triple torpedo tubes. The ship's sensors include long and short range radars and an electro-optical tracking system for air and surface surveillance, electronic warfare surveillance sensors and a hull mounted sonar. A computer based command and control system processes information as well as a data link from other ships and aircraft. The ship has a sophisticated suite of communications equipment allowing it communicate with other ships, aircraft and shore establishments. Canberra is the third ship to bear this name. The original was a RAN Heavy Cruiser, which served from 1928 until she was sunk at the Battle of Savo Island in 1942. The second was a United States Navy Heavy Cruiser, USS Canberra, named in honour of the first, which served from 1944 to 1978 filling roles as a Heavy Cruiser and later a, Guided Missile Heavy Cruiser and ceremonial flagship. HMAS Canberra is now decommissioned. The ANZAC Class is based on the German Meko 200 frigate design with eight ships being constructed in Australia as part of the overall plan to upgrade the Royal Australian Navy. ANZACs are long-range escorts with roles including air defence, anti submarine warfare, surveillance, reconnaissance and interdiction. The ships are capable of countering simultaneous threats from the air, surface and sub-surface. Powered by a combined diesel or gas (CODOG) propulsion plant permits speeds in excess of 27 knots with an operational range of more than 6000 nautical miles. Each Anzac frigate is fitted with an advanced package of air surveillance radars, omni-directional hull mounted sonar and electronic support systems which interface with a state-of-the-art combat data system. The ships' main armament comprises one five inch (127 mm) gun capable of firing 20 rounds per minute, ship launched torpedoes and a MK 41 vertical launch system for the Sea Sparrow point defence missile. Kaman SeaSprite helicopters were to be embarked to enhance anti-surface and surveillance capabilities, but with problems with that program the SeaHawk can be embarked. permission as the Royal Australian (and New Zealand) Navy ANZAC Class frigate, the Aussie
version of the Meko. Capun's Meko is a 220, the Aussie version is the 200, the main
differences in the 200 are the lack of the quad 30mm mount, and a VLS instead of dedicated
Sea Sparrow and Harpoon launchers.
